Letter Re: Feeding The Redoubt: The Painted Mountain Corn Project

From SurvivalBlog.com

Dear SurvivalBloggers:
For all who are called to the American Redoubt: Secure your food and preserve your freedom of action!

If you don’t have a place to grow your own healthy food, support those who do. Go in for shares. Help them every way you can. Growing all your own food now may not be economically viable, but secure sources of food are your lifeline in the future. Our goal should be not only to survive, but to thrive!

My brother and I were born and raised in the American Redoubt and grew up living the life of “preppers” and “survivalists” out of financial and environmental necessity. We did not realize our lifestyle was unusual until going off on scholarships to boarding school on the east coast and college in the south. In these uncertain times, we have come back home to our wild mountains, to make the preparations that need to be made. As our father, New Ordinance, says, “I want to turn the lights back on. As I see it, we are here not only to survive the approaching vicissitudes but to preserve the ‘arts of civilization’ and pass the torch to the next generation so that a new civilization can emerge from the detritus of the old to fulfill the original promise and destiny of America.” (From “The Secret Weapon,” Copyright © 2012 New Ordinance)

Speaking as a member of my generation, this is a daunting responsibility. How does one…

Is The Food We Eat Killing Us?

From The Economic Collapse

Are we digging our own graves with our teeth?  Is the food that we eat every day slowly killing us?  When I was growing up, I just assumed that everything in the grocery store was perfectly safe and perfectly healthy.  I just assumed that the government and the big corporations were watching out for us and that they would never allow something harmful to be sold in the stores.  Boy, was I wrong!  Today, the average American diet is extremely unhealthy.  Most of the foods that we all love to eat are absolutely packed with things that will damage our health.  Many of the ingredients that make our foods “taste good” such as fat, salt and sugar can be extremely damaging in large amounts.  On top of that, most processed foods are absolutely loaded with chemicals and preservatives.  The next time you go to the grocery store, just start turning over packages and read the “ingredients” that are being put into our food.  If you have never done this before, you will be absolutely amazed.  In many of our most common foods there are “ingredients” that I cannot even pronounce.  Sadly, most Americans have no idea that eating a steady diet of these processed foods will likely leave them massively overweight, very sick and much closer to death.

Eating healthy takes more time, more effort and more money than…

Cash Cow Liquidity Comparison: Where’s the Cash and Where’s the Debt? A Look at the Top 50 Companies

From Mish’s Global Economic Trend Analysis

In light of  renewed banter about corporations being flush with cash following Apple’s stellar earnings, I thought it would be instructive to take a look at the top 50 companies by market cap in the following ways:

  1. Debt and liabilities vs. cash
  2. Debt and liabilities vs. cash plus short-term investments
  3. Debt and liabilities vs. cash plus both short-term and long-term investments

With thanks to Ross Perez at Tableau Software for compiling the data for my idea, please consider the following interactive graph.

Note the ability to change the “cash” metric in the upper right of the graph.

Liquidity Comparison

Richard Shaw has an excellent article on Seeking Alpha that discusses cash, short-term investments, and long-term investments and what they mean: Comparing Liquidity Of Microsoft And Apple And Both Compared To Other Cash Rich Companies.

Bottom line: net cash on hand at the top 50 companies is negative to the tune of $ 1.479 trillion. If one considers short-term investments to be cash equivalents, then net cash is negative $ 1.251. Only if long-term investments are included does the number go positive.

Clearly there is not as much “sideline cash” as most are led to believe. By the way, the notion of sideline cash is bogus in the first…

Preparedness for Dark Times, by John D.

From SurvivalBlog.com

I am a deputy sheriff in Louisiana and patrol primarily on the night shift. A few nights ago my shift was alerted that the main city in our parish was under a complete "black out", meaning a total loss of ALL electricity. The reason for the blackout was unknown but the repercussions were great. The power stayed out for a mere hour and a half, but that was all it took to cause  chaos all throughout the city. In this hour and a half multiple shootings occurred, multiple wrecks occurred on the highways and city streets, and multiple stores and businesses were broken into and looted due to security systems malfunctioning. All within that small hour and a half. It really shows how fragile the order in our cities hangs in the balance. People who would probably have been watching television or engaging in other peaceful activities, were gathering in the streets starting fights. All because the lights and tv turned off. Wow. Only a handful of people had nothing to worry about because they were prepared with a few necessities such as: flashlights, food, water, protection (I.e.  Rifle, handgun, or shotgun).

I am writing this to remind you of the importance of being prepared for a "lights out" situation like this. This type of thing happens all the time and can happen in your area  anytime. These are some minimum guidelines for what you need on hand in a two to three week blackout scenario.…

What’s under my lawn?

From What if IT is today? – A Survivalist’s Blog

Since I’ve watered my front and back lawn several times this week it’s greening up nicely.  I know it means I’m going to be mowing more than two or three times a year but to not have the foxtails on the animals or the grand kids clothes will make it all worth the extra time.  This evening I was moving the back sprinkler that’s in the middle of the lawn.  I only have one sprinkler for the back and it pretty well covers the lawn which is about 80 or 90 feet square.  I moved it before I turned it on because it wasn’t quite reaching the patio.  About a ten foot strip wasn’t getting watered.  I must have moved it too much because the patio was soaked when I looked at it about 30 minutes later.  I turned the water off and moved it again.  I tried pushing the stake into the ground.  It wouldn’t go more than 2 inches.  It sounded like I hit a rock.  I moved it a few inches away, hit something again.  Moved it a little more, hit something again.  I dug through the wet lawn and felt the rock.  It wasn’t a rock.  It felt like cement.  I have no clue what is under my lawn.

When I moved in 15 years ago the yard was split in half with a bunch of plants enclosing the lawn area to about 25 feet.  There were

Home Defense

From Total Survivalist Libertarian Rantfest

I stumbled into this video. There really isn’t anything (big picture) in it that I disagree with. I like the emphasis on preventing people from breaking into your place to begin with. An alarm (or at least the placards), a big  barking dog and some motion lights will go a long way to making the neighbors house seem inviting. As the old cliche says “you don’t have to outrun the bear, just the slowest member of your party.”

The only real point that I would add that is within the video’s scope is about OPSEC. Often, and probably more often than not, burglaries are not random. Crooks don’t just decide to rob your house at 1832 Woodland Street out of the blue. They decide to rob you because you sold a car for 10 grand a few days ago and they think the cash is in the house. They decide to rob you because you showed a dozen people a safe full of sweet guns at a party a year ago and one of them (probably just making conversation)  told somebody who is a crook. Limiting public displays of stuff worth stealing by using common sense measures goes a long way.

Also having a gun on your person, a plan and a long gun handy for if goblins decide to actually come into your house is very sound advice.
