How to Become a World-Class Survivalist in 5 Simple Steps

16. March 2011

By Olive K., who received her accounting degrees online and is working on getting her degree in social work completed while working on her survival skills on the side.

With the recent econopocalypse, it’s no wonder that people are becoming more interested in what it would take to survive after our current society has undergone a major shift. After all, if something we thought was intrinsically stable—our financial sector, and the guarantee of ever increasing wealth—is actually pretty flimsy, well, a lot of other things can be brought into question too. Take out a seemingly small piece of the puzzle, like access to gasoline, and you find that your local grocery will run out of goods within 2 days. Learning the basic skills to survive without the modern conveniences of society is a way to prepare you for these unpredictable shifts. And, the skills you’ll hone in the process—self-reliance, problem solving, and cleverness—are ones that will definitely benefit you in your everyday life.

1. Get In Shape

It’s not that exciting of a tip, but it’s probably the most important in terms of survival. Having an in-shape cardiovascular system will mean that you’ll be able to run, forage, and do any other intense aerobic activity that comes with living outside of society. Keeping your muscles strong is to key for chopping wood, building shelter, and generally being useful when physical brawn again becomes as important as intellectual ability.

2. Learn Basic Wilderness Skills

Before you hit the…

The Importance of Staying Calm During a Crisis

16. March 2011

This post was written by Nora P., who is attending sonogram technician school and is also enrolled in courses at onlineuniversities.net

We are always told to expect the unexpected, but that never changes the fact that the unexpected is, well, unexpected. Crises may occur at any time without warning, and the best plans for dealing with such incidents often seem to go awry. One of the key aspects of successfully dealing with a crisis is to stay calm.

People think more clearly and rationally when they are calm; that is a simple fact. Panicking clouds judgment, impedes reaction time, and drastically decreases productivity. Essentially, it solves nothing, and in times of disaster such as floods or tornadoes diminishes chances of survival. Research has shown panicking to be linked with momentary impaired neurological function and memory loss, and so even if a crisis plan is in place, it may be harder to follow.

Being calm allows for a crisis plan to be followed, and oftentimes being calm is a result of knowing what to do next, so it is extremely important to have a solid, thoughtful, and well-understood crisis plan in place for you and your family. Do some research or talk to some experts to learn how best to have a disaster plan for your family, whether at home or during the week when everyone is off at school and work.

During an actual crisis, staying calm is necessary to execute your disaster plan and

I had a loyal minion who felt really, really bad for not sending me 10% of his paycheck ( that’s GROSS, people, not net ) so to try to atone for this affront he sent me a really cool link.

This is how to convert your bike to run on railroad tracks. Now, granted, this does present a problem or two. Anyone can set up an ambush and you will screw the pooch. Also, on the off chance that someone figured out how to convert their truck to a wood burner that ran on tracks they could come along and squish you and all the belongings on your bicycle. However, if you control the area the tracks are in, it does give your Army Of Doom a great way to move troops and supplies. The tracks should last a lot longer than the asphalt,…

The Survival Mindset – Positive Thinking

When faced with the adversity of a disaster or a crisis, one of the best tools you can use for your survival is positive thinking. The right frame of mind will take you a lot further along the path to survival. Your chances for survival will only increase if you learn to use positive thinking in a survival situation. Positive thinking will not only allow you to overcome obstacles to your survival more easily but will also allow you to return your life to a state of normal faster.
There are a couple of things that you should avoid in a survival situation. These things won’t help your survival mindset or your ability to think in a positive manner during a crisis.
Make every effort possible to avoid wishful thinking. It’s not very realistic. Wishful thinking may make you feel better about your situation but it won’t help your chances for survival. You should learn to recognize every life-threatening situation and act accordingly to overcome it. Don’t develop a tendency to see things with a false sense of reality and you will be better able to handle a crisis if it occurs.
You will also do well to avoid negative thinking. Negative thinking will only allow your emotions to take control of your thought processes and hinder your ability to deal with a crisis or a survival situation. You will

Scramble to Avert Meltdowns; Death Toll Estimate Tops 10,000; Industries Shut Down; Japan Goes Deeper in Debt; Keynesian Stimulus Nonsense

Ever since the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan, news has been flowing from the country, nearly all of it bad.

Partial Meltdowns Likely Occurred

The New York Times reports Japanese Scramble to Avert Meltdowns as Nuclear Crisis Deepens After Quake

Japanese officials struggled on Sunday to contain a widening nuclear crisis in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and tsunami, saying they presumed that partial meltdowns had occurred at two crippled reactors and that they were facing serious cooling problems at three more.

The emergency appeared to be the worst involving a nuclear plant since the Chernobyl disaster 25 years ago. The developments at two separate nuclear plants prompted the evacuation of more than 200,000 people. Japanese officials said they had also ordered up the largest mobilization of their Self-Defense Forces since World War II to assist in the relief effort.

On Saturday, Japanese officials took the extraordinary step of flooding the crippled No. 1 reactor at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, 170 miles north of Tokyo, with seawater in a last-ditch effort to avoid a nuclear meltdown.

Then on Sunday, cooling failed at a second reactor — No. 3 — and core melting was presumed at both, said the top government spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano. Cooling had failed at three reactors at a nuclear complex nearby, Fukushima Daini, although he said conditions there were considered less dire for now.

A meltdown occurs when there is insufficient cooling…

Fellow blogger over at ModernSurvivalBlog wrote up a post about the following -

An EMP attack is one of the most feared methods of TSHTF for me. Unfortuately – I also believe it is one of the most likely. Imagine a total collapse of the power grid along with most all electronic equipment ceasing to funtion. Got those fancy GMRS radio’s? – don’t work. Got that 4 wheeel drive bug out vehicle? – don’t work. Of course – there would be no grocery stores open, no fast food drive thru’s, banks would be closed, and life as we know it would cease.

I’d recommend that BenDover Bernanke and all the Big Bank folks change their passwords immediately….. oh, and those Windows machines you have scattered around ?

They’re an especially-bad idea.
