Cash Stash and Emergency Supplies

From SURVIVING IN ARGENTINA

Fernando,

I was changing the gas in my emergency generator today and thought of
you (I asked you about generators several years ago before I purchased a
2800 W Yamaha with a pure sine wave inverter – very nice, very quite).

At the bottom of page 217 you wrote, “Example: if the USD crashes and
you decide to sell some PM’s to buy a month’s worth of supplies, do it
quickly, sell the PM’s or Euros or whatever other solid currency you
have and use the dollars that same day or the following day at most”

I understand the concept. Get rid of the currency ASAP due to the
inflation risk of a depreciating currency. Otherwise keep the investment
in PM’s or stronger currency.

My question is the timeline of the currency decline in Argentina. I
assume, when the banks first closed, cash was king. I assume, if you had
cash for that first week while the majority of people did not it was a
blessing. But, for how long. Would it have been wiser to transfer the
cash in the early stages, or even prior, of the decline into other hard
assets such as food, or ???. (CURRENT EXAMPLE: In the USA if you haven’t
acquired your self-defense tools by now, you are too late to the party)

Battle Drills and SOP’s

From Total Survivalist Libertarian Rantfest

FM 25-101 defines a battle drill as “a collective action rapidly executed without applying a deliberate decision-making process.”

a. Characteristics of a battle drill are–

  • They require minimal leader orders to accomplish and are standard throughout the Army.
  • Sequential actions are vital to success in combat or critical to preserving life.
  • They apply to platoon or smaller units.
  • They are trained responses to enemy actions or leader’s orders.
  • They represent mental steps followed for offensive and defensive actions in training and combat.

I could not find a good definition for Standard Operating Procedure. My informal one is simply a standardized way of doing something within an organization.

A battle drills is a collective response to a given event applied rapidly with minimal thinking. According to FM 7-8 there are 8 battle drills but some obvious alternatives could be put in place to suit a specific units mission. Some of the Army ones could be used more or less as is, others might be discarded (conduct initial breach of a mined wire obstacle comes to mind) while some new ones (react to house fire and react to home invasion come to mind) depending on your group as well as it’s concerns. Furthermore SOP’s are often the basis for METL tasks.

Where battle drills fail is if people try to make battle drills out of something

Commentary – Why I zero my AR at 50 yards…….

From ModernSurvivalOnline.com

First off – my eye’s are not what they used to be. 100 yards with a non-magnified optic looks pretty far. 200 yards with a non-magnified optic or open sights is extremely far especially considering target identification. Anyways  - back to why I zero my AR at 50 yards.

The M193 55 grain 5.56mm round – and similar loads - are very flat shooting out to 200-250 yards. A lot depends on sight type and distance the sights are above the bore. Typically, with a zero at 50 yards – the bullet will be close to 2 inches high at 100 yards – and 2 inches low at 250 yards. That is pretty flat. My normal shooting distances are between 25 yards and 100 yards – so everything is pretty right on between those ranges.

With my AR’s sighted at 50 yards I feel confident that at any range from 0 – 250 yards – my rifle can hit a torso sized target as long as I have steady aim and good trigger pull.

By the way – my tired eye’s enjoy the view using the Vortex Strikefire sight.

Pat’s Product Review: Ruger SR556E

28. April 2013

From SurvivalBlog.com

I’ve always been a big fan of Ruger firearms – all of them! There’s many reasons for my liking Ruger firearms, first of all, I find their firearms robust, strong and well-designed. Ruger doesn’t simply copy some other designs for the most part – instead, they are innovators in many ways. I still remember when the first Ruger P-85 9mm handguns came out, and everyone thought they wouldn’t last because they were made from "investment casting" aluminum frames- Ruger proved everyone wrong.

A few years ago, I tested the Ruger SR556 piston-driven AR-style rifle, and loved it. Everyone was jumping on the piston-driven AR bandwagon, and Ruger was no different, they than they didn’t copy anyone else’s piston-driven design – they came up with their own, after a lot of research and development. The SR556 comes with all the bells and whistles you can ask for, and then some – including a nice padded carrying case, several MagPul PMags – which I personally believe are the best AR mags on the market, and top-of-the-line pop-up front and rear sights and many other accessories, that don’t come on many AR-style rifles.

However, not everyone wanted or needed all that the SR556 came with as standard equipment, nor was everyone willing to pay the almost $ 2,000 price tag. Now comes the Ruger SR556E. Many people mistakenly believe that the "E" stands for an "Economy" model, but that is NOT

Gun Show Report 4/27/13

From Total Survivalist Libertarian Rantfest

Turns out our little town had a gunshow today! So needless to say I had to check it out. As I’m in the market for a Glock 26 it made sense to go look. It was interesting for sure. Aside from the baby Glock I wasn’t really looking for anything but was open to a great deal or something small to fill a need.

Guns: Tons of AR’s, AK’s, SKS’s and Mini 14′s. A good variety of semi auto .308′s; M1A’s and PTR-91′s, a FAL n a solitary genuine HK G3 (semi). Older guns like Garands and M1 carbines were present as well as lots of hunting type rifles. Plenty of semi auto pistols like XD’s, M&P’s, Sigs, Glocks, etc though due to the sheer variety in that market the specific gun you want (in my case a Glock 26) might not have been be present. As to Glocks there were at least 1 each 17 and 19, a few various .45′s and a couple G27′s.Shotguns and .22′s were also present in large numbers.

Prices varied widely. Some politically incorrect guns (mostly AR’s n AK’s) were priced OK considering the state of things. A couple AR’s were at or around a grand. They were DMPS, the basic M&P’s or comparable brands. Saw 2 nice new (dealer) rifles (BCM and Stag) for $ 1,150ish. Other rifles varied from optimistically priced to just silly. Several AR’s from brands I have

My Five-Step Plan to Ban Guns in the US Within 10 Years, by Jason H.

27. April 2013

From SurvivalBlog.com

I currently provide consulting services to major global corporations. One effective way to do battle with a competitor is to place yourself in their shoes and plan out your own demise – exactly what I will do here today. Below is my concise strategy to completely ban firearms in the US within 10 years. I am not alone here, rest assured there are many groups that have paid tidy sums to have the same roadmap developed and are currently rolling it out in a very deliberate manner.

Step 1 – Divide to conquer. We know there were not enough votes to maintain the AWB and there are more gun owners now then there were in 2004. We know there is Youtube and forums that people gather on and multiply like cockroaches. We know that about 5 million AR-15s have been sold and probably the same magnitude of AK-47s if not more. We have surveys, Freedom of Information requests and NICS records at our disposal. We cannot defeat the entire gun owning US and we know it, but it doesn’t matter one bit. Let them believe the NRA is all powerful and they don’t have to act on their own, much less as a group.

First, make this a Democrat versus Republican issue. This will cut their forces in half immediately.

Next, divide the gun owners into niche groups and get them to turn on each other. We know there are gun owners that only hunt. We’ll…

Baby Glocks?

As it gets hot here packing the G19, other than open carry, isn’t getting any easier. Do have a valid option in the J frame but the capacity and reload situation there is not so great. A better option that will be easier to conceal than the G19 would be nice to have on inventory. A Glock 26 came into my head as an option. A bit thick for such a small gun but it holds a lot of bullets for it’s size plus the mags/ parts/ ammo are already on inventory.

If you own or have owned a Glock 26 I am interested in your thoughts. Thanks,
-Ryan

UNPRECEDENTED Shortages Of Ammo, Physical Gold And Physical Silver

From SHTF Plan – When It Hits The Fan, Don’t Say We Didn’t Warn You

Panic Button By John On FlickrAll over the United States we are witnessing unprecedented shortages of ammunition, physical gold and physical silver.  Recent events have helped fuel a “buying frenzy” that threatens to spiral out of control.  Gun shops all over the nation are reporting that they have never seen it this bad, and in many cases any ammo that they are able to get is being sold even before it hits the shelves.  The ammo shortage has already become so severe that police departments all over America are saying that they are being told that it is going to take six months to a year to get their orders.  In fact, many police departments have begun to trade and barter with one another to get the ammo that they need.  Meanwhile, the takedown of paper gold and paper silver has unleashed an avalanche of “panic buying” of physical gold and physical silver all over the planet.  In the United States, some dealers are charging premiums of more than 25 percent over the spot price for gold and silver and they are getting it.  People are paying these prices even though they are being told that delivery will not happen for a month or two in many cases.  Some dealers are feverishly taking as many orders as they can, and they are just hoping that they…
