Pat’s Product Review: Montie Gear AR Rest

From SurvivalBlog.com

Over the past month or so, I’ve received quite a few requests from folks who want me to test and evaluate their products. I enjoy testing products for SurvivalBlog, and reporting back my findings to SurvivalBlog readers. Some of the companies that contact me, have a lot of questions, and I’m happy to answer them. Some companies ask me if I can guarantee that I’ll write an article on their products – and the answer is "yes." Then, they ask me if I can guarantee them that the article will appear on SurvivalBlog – I refer them to Jim Rawles, as he’s the editor, and gives the final yea or nay on if or when a piece runs. And, lastly, some folks ask me if I am going to give their products a "positive" review in my article. My answer to them is "no!" I will never guarantee anyone that I will give their products a positive review – I report my findings as fairly and honestly as I can. If those products aren’t up to par, or as advertised, that’s the way I will report my findings.

When I was publishing and editing a little newsletter called "Police Hot Sheet" many years ago, I was contacted by a fellow who made an impact device, and he told me if was more effective than a hit from a 12 gauge shotgun. Needless to say, I was more than a little skeptical of those…

From SHTF Plan – When It Hits The Fan, Don’t Say We Didn’t Warn You

Food… check.

Water… check.

Guns and ammo… check.

Gold, silver and bartering supplies… check.

Most of those who have taken steps to prepare for a post-collapse America have acquired the basic essential goods and trading supplies that will be needed in the event of worst-case economic, financial or societal collapse. We’ve created bug-out, bug-in, and self defense plans that we hope will be sufficient enough to give us the edge against potential thieves, looters and criminals who will undoubtedly be coming for our supplies when resources in the general population begin to run dry. Stocked with the latest in SHTF weaponary and ammunition, the overwhelming majority of us believe that we’ll be able to neutralize any threat that may present itself.

In general, the three million preppers in America will no doubt hold several key advantages over non-preppers, namely that we’ve stocked larder to provide the energy we need to function at optimal production levels, land that is isolated or well secured against the inevitable hordes of people looking basic survival goods like food, and firearms to defend what’s ours.

However, despite how prepared we think we are, if there’s one principle by which preppers should operate it’s that best laid plans generally don’t pan out the way we anticipated. Murphy’s law will be in full effect in a post-collapse scenario. As such,…

Squaring Up My Collection

From Total Survivalist Libertarian Rantfest

I have made the decision to sell my M1 Garand and Springfield Mil Spec 1911. The 1911 probably has a buyer lined up. The M1 Garand sale may take some proactive work when I get back to the states.

The biggest selling point with the 1911 sale was that it would eliminate a caliber and go a long way towards simplifying my logistics. Also could parley the cash from it into another Glock 9mm. I would only have Glock 9mm and .38/.357 mag to worry about stockpiling. That being said I will hold onto at least a few hundred rounds of .45 ammo and a few mags because common caliber ammunition is a good thing and I got it awhile back at decent prices. I wish I had done this when I sold the .40.

I don’t really have anything against the 1911 platform. It is just that I don’t really every find myself carrying it. Mine is a full sized parkerized model which isn’t ideal for my purposes. I would like a commander sized lightweight stainless 1911 and maybe some day one will come to our house. However it is a want not a need and I will not be inclined to indulge those for some time.

The Garand is a nice gun and all but tying up several hundred dollars in potential resources for a collectible is not a great idea for the place I am at in life. Not quite

Sport Shooting for Preppers, by C.K.

From SurvivalBlog.com

I’m going to talk about an aspect of survival that may or may not have been covered already. I haven’t seen it so far in SurvivalBlog, and it only gets a passing nod in many books.

An important aspect of just about everyone’s preps involves guns of some sort. You can see a lot of that in shows like "Doomsday Preppers." I’d guess (because I haven’t seen every episode and I’m too lazy to do an exact count) that about 90% of the preppers featured on the show have or talk about having guns. Handguns, rifles, shotguns of a wide variety of shapes, sizes and calibers. Some of the episodes give a passing nod to gaining some level of proficiency with them, some episodes showcase the number the prepper has (probably to emphasize the degree of obsession the featured guest has with TEOTWAWKI). JWR’s novel "Patriots" talks about some of the characters taking classes at Front Sight. (Although I’d have picked a better school than that, like Gunsite or the Magpul guys).

Few people, blogs, books, or television shows talk about maintaining a level of proficiency. We all kind of talk around it, but it can be a grind, just training, training, training. It gets old quickly, it burns money for ammo (or components–if you’re not reloading, shame on you; but that’s another show) you’d probably spend on another prep, and it burns that most precious commodity, time.

So, what’s a prepper…

From SHTF blog

Great guest post today from a Vietnam Veteran, career firearms instructor, and friend. He makes the case for purchasing a .22lr AR-15. See what you think.

But before we get there, special thanks to BePreparedNow.net for their ad purchase. Visit them and use coupon code “shtf” for a 10% discount on your order.

You’re prepared for the worst. You have a black rifle, several hundred rounds, spare magazines and an assault case. Possibly, you’ve bolted some accessories on to your AR-15 so all contingencies will be covered. But, here’s a thought: Can you actually shoot this thing?

Drilling cans at 20 yards is fun. Tiny groups shot from sand bags at 100 yards are fulfilling. But, how do these activities translate to the real reasoning behind your purchase? And, can you really afford to burn up several hundred rounds of .223 within a short period. Heck, do you even have access to a spot where that amount of noise will be tolerated? A friend recently bought 500 rounds of foreign, steel-cased .223 ammo. He “only” paid $ 120 for it. He’ll go through a few 20-round boxes now and then, being careful not to blast through his whole stash at once. Just about all of his shooting will be inside 100 yards and his targets won’t know how fast the bullets are going. The things he’ll be aiming at are likely to be bigger than aspirin tablets, which beg the…

I have been spending a lot less time on social networks lately. I like to communicate with family and close friends and see their pictures and all that but do I really need to spend time figuring out what is going on with that random guy I partied with a decade ago or played a sport with in Junior High? Probably not. Anyway this has lead to a reallocation of my interwebz time which has lead to me hanging out on Zombiehunters and Survivalistforums. I am theotherryan on both of them if you want to drop me a line or whatever.

The concept of kits is hit on pretty hard in both of these places, or maybe it is where I seem to gravitate as that is my focus right now. In any case I have seem some interesting things.
Some folks get real heavy on one thing or another. Sometimes it is radios/ communication but it almost always seems to be knives. Do you really need 2 folders, a multi tool, a small sheath knife, a big sheath knife, a machete, a hatchet and a saw in a 25 pound car kit? I don’t think so. Anyway…
I have seen a lot of debate and some bickering on the exact role of different kits.

I think a lot of the discrepancy is that folks are using terms to mean different things, like a lack of

Preparing a Covert Gearbag or Warbag, by Racker

From SurvivalBlog.com

This site is known for material geared towards protection and preparation for some ultimate tests of social interaction. While we may be working to prepare ourselves for a high end threat, keep in mind that there are levels between normal and end situations; we may not go from normal to end in one quick swoop.  We must be prepare for various levels and react accordingly when we or our families are threatened. Knowledge and our equipment are tools to better prepare us to deal with any serious social situation.

After writing a previous article on Weapon Use, Slings, Web Gear, and Associated Weapon Equipment, I thought I would elaborate a little on the covert aspects of weapons carry and related gear. Again, most of this is based upon my experience of “blending in” while wearing plain clothes as a detective and non-uniformed Sheriff’s Deputy as well as off-duty handgun carry.

Disclaimer: I am not advocating that anyone break the law. In your home or on your own property the described items are usually legal. Please confirm as location and the laws vary so you must check your state and local laws regarding how you would utilize firearms and under what circumstances. I offer this information for consideration but the ultimate decision would rest upon the person possessing and using any firearm and in some states, even the possession of types of semiautomatic weapons and the magazines used. And, remember, depending…

Testing Yourself and Your Gear To Survive When TSHTF

From SHTF blog

Testing myself.

You went out and bought the latest backpack and a white gas stove that will work on top of Mt. Everest.  You bought the newest sleep system, all the best cold weather gear, freeze dried food, water filter, a great survival knife, and the latest .22 survival rifle that breaks down and fits into its own stock and lots of ammo to go with it.  You’re ready for the zombie wars.  You put the bag in a corner of your closet ready to go and two years later there it sits…

Then one night there’s a flood or (choose your disaster scenario here) and you’ve got to bug out.  For whatever reason you have to go on foot, so you run to the closet, grab your BOB and throw it on your back and head out.  You’ve got enough food, water, and gear for a week and you know you’re going to be ok, but a half-mile down the road the straps from that 55 lb bag start to dig into your shoulders and your hips are burning from the waist strap.  Your breath is coming in ragged gasps and it feels like someone is raking broken glass across your lungs.  You realize you’re sporting an extra ten or fifteen pounds yourself and the walk you used to be able to do with your pack with no problem…

G3 mags back at CTD

22. April 2012

From Notes from the bunker…

Got an email from CTD the other day pointing out that their $ 1.97 G3 mags are back in stock. Not as great a deal as when they were $ 0.97 each, but still a screamin’ bargain for anything marked ‘HK’. If youve a PTR-91 or a genuine HK-91 you should stock up while you can. If you dont have a rifle that takes these mags, it’s still worth a few bucks to put ‘em away as investments.

I was busy reloading 9mm ammo today so that’s kinda in the spirit of day.
Nonetheless, today is the day we recall that actions of armed citizenry, en masse, can make for awesome changes.
