hey i had the same problem chickens were in my garage eating dog food and on my front porch becuas ei live in the woods kinda and we built them a pen. the best routine i have is lock them up at night and let them loose at 11-12 not in the morning becuase theres more hawks then. and get a rooster. it was amazing how they communicated so well when a hawk was about to swoop down when they were FR hafe the chickens would flank one directing and the half the other even chicks!

how is raising chickens to eat them for your own pleasure except for eating them. while i dont slauter my chickens hens or rooster. but chickens are going to die oneday and i dont chickens really undertsand life becuase in my old coop weasels killed a bunch of chickens the remaining chickens would eat their corpsesthere not smart enough to realize “i want to live” the only reason they run from people are preds. is fear. theyre scared

You have a really nice pen setup going on.We never had to put a top over the pen due to no hawks in the area or very few I’ll say.The biggest problem was black snakes, coons and stray dogs and foxes raiding the pen and trying to get in the hen house.I hate snakes and they are the hardest to keep out but I never heard of the moth ball idea, guess I should try that.

  4. Danny Devlin Says:

    Your joking right ?

  5. dirtydresser5 Says:

Killing chickens is wrong and inhumane all the time because at the end of the day your still sticking a knife into an innocent birds throat for your own pleasure.

As far as Rhode Island Reds out producing an australorp, think again, australorps got the wolrd record 364 eggs in a year, they are the best. ALso they lay for 5 years or more your reds will lay for two and start falling off. They do get started sooner than the australorp, but they don’t range as well and they devil birds. The male red will be meatier.

  7. attilaclark Says:

I have australorps, black copper marans, sussex, and brought in two rode island reds (devil birds) and the reds started picking and eating feathers. They will go from that to cannibalism sure as shit. Got rid of them. Mixed flock or not they are prone to picking. No problem with any of my other birds.

and the amount of day light . in the winter put a light in the hen house and the will lay close to the same amount as you get in the summer

  9. OTRACUENTAPERRA Says:

Australorps might be broodier but they will not outlay the Rhode Island Reds. Only theWhite Leghorn lays more eggs than the Rhode Island Red. However the male of The White Leghorn is a very poor meat bird. The Rhode Island Red male is a large meat bird and the female is simply the best layers of red eggs. I have found that for free range the Rhode Island Red is awesome. Cannibalism as well as other problems can be solved with space and nutrition.

Great video . The only thing I would like to say is : Don’t make the mistake of thinking that there are heavy breeds of chicken that are better layers of eggs than the Rhode Island Reds.

Bawk! Adorable birds. I like your videos…my fiance and I have a small backyard homestead dealie in CT. It’s small, but good and healthy.

  12. bubby303 Says:

ive herd that you can spray there back with red paint and they will stop picking at it but i never tryed it. HOW EVER a breading vest will work because it coveres the back were the picking normaly takes place.

  13. Christianprepper1 Says:

I tried free ranging but my chickens seemed to like my front porch and garage area more than the woods. It was just being to messy.

  14. PantherProductions65 Says:

For cannibalism the trick that worked for me was to just free range them. After a week of free ranging they stopped “harassing” the one hen.

  19. GorgeousLookin Says:

you can cut the spurs of the males if you dont want the females feathers to be missing from their back. use candle wax to seal it up to stop the bleeding. a lot of people do it nowadays. and i’d rather have 2 males in a group of 10 females to keep the eggs fertilized cuz some males are not sexually active like others

  20. Christianprepper1 Says:

Thanks, I have read that Rhode Island reds are the worst at this. But I will try the salt, I have tried everything else.

  21. RixDobbs Says:

If chickens start cannibalizing – they need more salt in their diet.

You need to get some Buff Orpingtons mine Have went broody more times then I can count speaking of wich right now I have 2 broodies and 1 that has chics.
Also A rooster can handle up to 10 hens with no problems and the bare spots on their back is from your rooster getting busy those ones are is favs if you remove them from the coop and pen the rooster will find new favs and the bare backed ones can heal.

but none of her daughters. So when you breed the hen to her son, all daughters should have the broody gene. Very pretty flock! I’ve always liked RIR’s. They were a favorite of my grandfather also.
